2024 AS Level Chemistry Exam Review: Easier Than Expected

AS and A Level Chemistry have a reputation for being exceptionally demanding examinations. This year's AS Level Chemistry paper, however, appears to have been much more approachable than expected.

When every student describes the paper as easy, the overall difficulty was probably lower—not simply easier for the students I taught. I am glad they were able to finish the examination confidently.

The A Level Chemistry course covers practical skills, foundations in chemistry, the periodic table and energetics, core organic chemistry, physical chemistry, transition elements, organic chemistry, and analysis.

Organic chemistry is difficult to master through memorisation alone. Students need to understand structures, reactions, and mechanisms well enough to apply them when a question is presented in an unfamiliar form.

Inorganic chemistry demands more deliberate memorisation of compounds, properties, and reaction conditions. Analysis becomes more manageable once the underlying ideas are understood, but students must still learn how to interpret experimental data accurately.

Other areas overlap substantially with AP Chemistry and may therefore feel more familiar. Each section has a different character, so preparation should match the kind of thinking it requires.

Past papers are essential, but solving them without a secure conceptual foundation limits improvement. The strongest results come from combining accurate understanding with a large and varied set of practice questions.
