How Two Middle School Students Earned 5s in AP Chemistry

Two middle school students who began with little formal Chemistry background earned scores of 5 on the 2022 AP Chemistry examination. Their age was unusual, but the preparation method was straightforward and sustained for more than six months.

They did not try to memorise an entire textbook from beginning to end. Instead, they learned the necessary foundations efficiently, moved quickly past material they already understood, and spent substantial time on exam-style questions.

Practice only becomes valuable when errors are resolved. For every missed question, the students identified the concept, calculation, or reading mistake, then corrected it before moving on. Multiple-choice work developed speed and recognition; free-response practice focused on concise claims, chemical reasoning, calculations, units, and evidence.

English comprehension also mattered because students needed to interpret prompts quickly. Most important, both students attended consistently, completed assignments, and asked questions. Their results are individual examples rather than a guarantee, but the process is widely transferable: build the foundation, practise deliberately, and learn from every error.
