How to Study IB Chemistry and Work Toward a Grade 7

Experience, marking, and school grades

After teaching IB Chemistry to well over a hundred students, I have worked through the same concepts and examination questions many times. That experience has shown me which habits most often lead to high scores, but it has also shown me how much school assessment can vary from one teacher to another.

Multiple-choice marking is relatively objective. Written explanations and school-assessed work can be less predictable, even when an answer closely follows the markscheme. Students therefore need more than chemical knowledge: they must learn the wording, level of detail, and conventions expected by their own teacher while still preparing to the IB standard.

A strict classroom can be frustrating, but careful preparation can still overcome many of these difficulties. Listen closely to feedback, identify exactly why marks were lost, and adapt before the next assessment.

Why the IA needs a clear strategy

The Internal Assessment is where teacher judgement can feel most visible. After reviewing many Chemistry IAs, I have seen papers of similar quality receive different school marks. A genuinely excellent investigation will usually stand out, but most students are working within a narrower middle range where structure, scientific accuracy, and communication matter enormously.

Students should learn the required format before writing, explain the chemistry correctly, and make every section easy to follow. The aim is not to make the IA look grand. It is to present a focused investigation with a defensible method, honest data, sound analysis, and a specific evaluation.

An IA also should not consume several months. My students often used the holiday to finish a complete draft before returning to school. With a workable question and timely guidance, a student can move much faster than someone who writes an entire draft, loses confidence, discards it, and starts again.

HL, SL, and the importance of the first topics

Compared with some other IB subjects, Chemistry HL and SL share a substantial foundation. HL goes further and deeper, but SL students still need a firm grasp of the core chemical ideas. This is especially obvious in stoichiometry, which appears early and can be demanding at either level.

Do not approach SL as though it requires little effort. The opening unit can expose weak algebra, unfamiliar chemical language, and poor calculator habits very quickly. Starting seriously from the first assessment is much easier than trying to repair confidence later.

Small details can cost large numbers of marks

Students sometimes understand the chemistry but still lose marks through significant figures, units, notation, or incomplete explanations. A calculation can use the correct method and still be penalised if the final presentation does not match the expected precision.

These details should be practised from the beginning, not added at the end. When a test result is lower than expected, review the paper line by line and separate conceptual errors from presentation errors. Both types need a deliberate correction plan.

Do not abandon organic chemistry

Organic chemistry arrives when many students are already tired, which makes the final part of the course easy to postpone. That is dangerous. Organic questions form a meaningful part of the examination, so giving up on the topic means giving away marks before the final even begins.

Work through the topic steadily, connect reaction types instead of memorising isolated facts, and ask for help as soon as the mechanisms or pathways stop making sense. Even a late start can improve with intensive practice, but deciding in advance to skip an entire area makes a high score much less realistic.

Past papers are the centre of preparation

No commercial workbook is as valuable as authentic IB-style questions. Once a topic has been taught, begin solving relevant past-paper questions instead of waiting until the whole syllabus is finished. Later, move into complete timed papers.

One attempt is not enough. Revisit difficult sets until the method and reasoning remain clear a week or a month later. The purpose is not to memorise an answer key; it is to recognise the underlying idea, explain it accurately, and apply it when the numbers or context change.

A thick textbook can support understanding, but reading it from beginning to end should not replace active problem solving. IB students are balancing six subjects and other commitments, so preparation must be selective and efficient. Learn the method, listen to experienced feedback, and invest most heavily in careful past-paper practice.
