What students who earn a 5 tend to do
Many students who studied with me went on to earn a 5 in AP Chemistry. The strongest common trait was not a special trick: they completed the work consistently. Even when I assigned questions from AP, IB, and A Level sources, they worked through them without excuses, asked questions, and sometimes requested more practice.
Consistency matters, but direction matters too. Students who trusted the study priorities I gave them usually progressed faster than equally diligent students who tried to master every page of every book on their own.

Study what the examination actually rewards
Knowing the test date and duration is useful, but the more important question is what the examination repeatedly asks students to do. AP Chemistry content is broad, and treating every detail as equally important is inefficient.
Begin with the recurring concepts and question types. Once those are secure, expand into less common details. Spending one or two months simply reading the thickest review book from the first page is rarely the best route to a 5.
MCQ and FRQ need different practice
Released multiple-choice questions are limited, so students often rely on commercial question banks. Some of those questions are unnecessarily difficult or unlike the real exam. Choose resources carefully and use experienced guidance to decide which sets are worth the time.
For free-response questions, authentic released material is much easier to find. Work through it repeatedly—at least three serious passes for the most useful sets—and understand every question rather than merely checking the scoring guide.
Practise writing the exact chemical keywords and reasoning that earn points. A long answer is not automatically a strong answer. The goal is a concise response that clearly communicates the principle the question is testing.

International-school students are often already comfortable with English chemical terminology. Students from Korean-language schools may need extra time to learn the vocabulary even when they understand the chemistry itself.
That gap is entirely manageable. Students with sound chemical reasoning and strong English can progress quickly regardless of school type. Others should deliberately build a bilingual vocabulary list and practise reading questions in English from the beginning.
A realistic preparation timeline
A student starting without a Chemistry foundation may need at least six months, and often closer to a year, when studying once a week. The first stage builds the basic principles; the next stage applies them to exam-style questions and complete papers.
Start looking at exam questions early, even before every topic is complete. This prevents students from spending months on material that the exam rarely emphasises and teaches them how familiar concepts are actually presented under test conditions.
AP Chemistry is not an easy examination for a complete beginner, but it becomes manageable with focused instruction, consistent homework, repeated FRQ practice, and a study plan built around understanding rather than memorisation.
