The 2024 IB Chemistry examinations are over, and many students contacted me immediately afterward. Most were relieved to have finished, while several were also worried about reports of examination material being shared without authorisation.
The messages below have been translated into English with student identities kept private. They show both the academic reactions and the anxiety created by the security concerns.
Reports of leaked papers caused real discomfort. Students were hearing alarming numbers and repeated rumours shortly after their examinations, even when they had no way to verify what was accurate.
Specific sources and access details are intentionally omitted. Sharing restricted examination content is unfair to students who prepare honestly and should never be promoted.
Students and parents were understandably anxious about whether the situation could affect grade boundaries. My immediate priority was to keep that anxiety from damaging preparation for the remaining examinations.
I repeatedly encouraged students to focus on what they could control: finish the next paper carefully, avoid unreliable online speculation, and wait for official results and guidance before drawing conclusions.
Away from the security issue, the overall academic reaction was fairly positive. Several students felt that the examinations were manageable and that their preparation had transferred well to the papers.
My provisional difficulty assessment was: Paper 1 contained a few confusing questions and felt medium to moderately difficult; Paper 2 was generally manageable; Paper 3 Section A was the most demanding, while Section B felt easier but varied by option.
Overall, the examination did not appear exceptionally difficult. I hope every student receives the result needed for the next stage of study.
