A HighFour Chemistry Competition Win and US University Costs: Southwestern University Pharmacy

Two of my first-year high-school students—one studying AP and the other SAT Chemistry—

told me they had won first place in an international Chemistry competition. I did not even know they were entering!

They had not said a word to me. Four students entered as a team and won, and two of them are my students.

I do not think it was a particularly large competition.

Still, it was happy news, so I wanted to write about it. Haha.

One of the students accepted to university this time is going into Pharmacy at Southwestern University. I was told the annual tuition is US$80,000.

Including living expenses, that would be about KRW 100 million a year. They are going without a scholarship, so six years of Pharmacy would come to around KRW 600 million.

It really does seem incredibly expensive.

The campus looks beautiful, though. Haha.

Even with campuses closed, schools seem to be handling online exams and grading consistently.

Several schools held exams today as well.

Here is a message from a student who seems to have done well. Because it was online, the school shortened the time limit, but the student appears to have finished much faster than that.

Now the AP exam is still ahead.

I am quite worried that this online AP exam might catch us off guard.

If the questions are not too unusual, I have many students who seem capable of earning a 5. I really hope a lot of them do.
